The Resort Group Announces Groundbreaking for Hilton Hotel in Cape Verde
Ceremony kicks off construction of 201-room hotel in capital city’s business district
Derby, UK – 16 November 2015 – The Resort Group has celebrated the groundbreaking for the first Hilton Hotel in Cape Verde’s capital and largest city, Praia, at a ceremony. The property developer’s CEO Rob Jarrett joined Cape Verdean Prime Minister, Jose Maria Neves, and President of Praia City Hall, Ulisses Correia e Silva, to mark the beginning of construction of Hilton Praia on Santiago Island, which is expected to open in 2018.
The celebration follows the signing of a multimillion-pound agreement between The Resort Group and Hilton Worldwide announced earlier this year. The upscale business hotel will offer 201 guestrooms and suites across 15 floors along with extensive meeting and event facilities. It will be built near the city’s diplomatic quarters, governmental institutions, commercial, finance and residential areas. Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) and the Port of Praia, one of the principle ports of Cape Verde, will be located just six kilometres from Hilton Praia.
The project fills a strong demand for a business hotel in the capital city of Cape Verde, a country which is recognised as an important trading location for Africa, Europe and the Americas, and has developed a credible track record of political stability. In fact, according to the World Trade Organisation, long-term growth of real GDP has averaged 7.7% per year (1990-2013) and, in 2014, economic growth reached 2.7%. Services currently contribute about 60% to GDP, with maritime and air transport earmarked as priority sectors for development.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Rob Jarrett, CEO of The Resort Group, commented: “Cape Verde is a recognised as a touristic hotspot, and our hotel resorts on Sal have hosted over a million holidaymakers since May 2011 – but it’s also developing its international business partnerships and for that, its capital Praia, requires a high quality hotel for business travellers and dignitaries. Our latest project will help meet that demand and the fact it’s backed by the most recognised hotel brand in the industry shows the commitment from both The Resort Group and Hilton Worldwide in playing a role in driving Cape Verde’s economy.”
