JazzSal Live Concert 2017

Based on the excellent experience last year, the second annual JazzSal Live Concert was held over the weekend. The first event took place in Praça de Santa Maria, and it saw the launch of a project that took the Island by storm. The musical and technical quality as well as the creativity on show went down brilliantly with both the public and the media. The aim in 2017 was to improve on this success – inviting local and national musicians, who rarely or never played together, to come together on stage and create a distinct sound.

The concert took place on July 8, 2017 from 9pm, in Praça Marcelo Leitão in Santa Maria with the stage set in the centre of the square. In line with last year, the stage had an incredible 360 degrees of view, with the audience sitting around it.

Cape Verde has a great range of musicians, instrumentalists and vocalists who are mainly self-taught with amateur but amazing knowledge of the music we hear on a day-to-day basis. Many are also visiting the Island  from elsewhere to join in the musical festivities and add a different sound. The Lagos Jazz Series Quintet from Nigeria is formed of young university students. Currently studying music, the group also act as baseband in the Lagos Jazz Series event, held every year in Lagos, Nigeria. They have their own repertoire, but they also enjoy success covering songs from other artisits, including Omar, Hamish Stuart, Marcus Miller and local artists such as Cobhams Asuquo, Waje, Burna Boy and Nigeria Idols winner, Evelle. The Resort Group PLC contributed to the event by providing accommodation for the band while they performed in the concert.

A pleasant evening was marked by the great music and incredible performances from talented local, national and international musicians. The audience enjoyed a musical contest during the two-hour show, including artists Lizender, Johny do Cavaco, Vando Pereira, Heribar Estrela, Pelada, Romário Rodrigues, Sílvia Medina, Dúnia Lobo and The Babel Brass section. The Lagos Jazz Quintet finished the night with flourish for the gathered audience, which included the public, honoured guests and tourists.
