Summer on Sal Island

Are you heading to the perennially sunny Island of Sal soon? There’s so much to see and do in the summer months on Cape Verde’s tourist hotspot.

While some call it a place of eternal sun, there are actually two seasons in Cape Verde. Namely, the Tempo das Brisas from October to mid-July and the Tempo das Chuvas from August to September. As they are virtually unrecognisable to visitors, tour operators tend to stick to the traditional four seasons that are so clearly distinguishable when you venture further away from the Equator. So, what should you expect from Sal during the hazy Summer months that Cape Verdeans consider the low season?

There are variety of activities that peak during this time of the year. Diving and snorkelling are at their best, as conditions clear and a variety of incredible fish and sea life make their way to the reefs around the Island. In the late Summer months, you can expect to see everything from sting rays, morays, manta rays, barracudas and sometimes even sand or tiger sharks. If you’re interested in sea life, now is also the time to spot whales and dolphins just off the coast of Sal – you can take a boat out into the Atlantic to see them in their natural habitat. Loggerhead turtles are also known for nesting and laying their eggs on the sandy beaches of Sal, as well as other Islands, primarily in July, August and September. Guided tours are available and they also help to preserve and protect the eggs by sticking to a strict protocol.

Sal Island

Although not at its best at this time of year, Sal still enjoys conditions suited to adventurous kite- and wind-surfing, conditions that are far greater than elsewhere.  It’s exactly why Cape Verde, and Sal Island in particular, is world-famous for watersports. Lastly, game fishing also sees an improvement during the season, with great conditions for deep sea fishing and an abundance of Yellow Fin Tuna, Sailfish and the famous Blue Marlin.

Guests can take advantage of a range of packages available through Thomson or their tour operator.

For those who enjoy a more relaxed approach to their Summer holiday, Sal also offers a blissful, chilled-out experience at Bikini Beach Club. A place to soak up the sunny feeling of the Island away from your all-inclusive Resort, you can enjoy the sunset in a unique setting and drinks that carry on into the evening.
